"I love the remote and quiet atmosphere of the building. It's easy to concentrate in the studio; it's my own world where invisible thoughts and experiences become visible."

The studio is in an old factory building where carpenters and artists work.

WWW Contemporary: How would you describe your workspace, Eveliina?

Eveliina Hämäläinen: The studio is in an old factory building where carpenters and artists work. It is located in the Herttoniemi industrial area in Helsinki. I have been working here since 2018. I am happy to share the space with another artist, as we can exchange thoughts about painting from time to time. Or at least see some traces of life in the studio and changes in the paintings, as we mainly work at different times.

"I scratch, engrave, and move the paint so that the lower layers become visible."

"Painting with ink is momentary, all traces remain visible on the paper, and the painting cannot be changed."

WWW Contemporary: What kind of materials and techniques you have been interested in lately, why?

Eveliina Hämäläinen: I work with oil paints on canvas and ink on paper. It is interesting to work with the same themes using different techniques. Painting with ink is momentary, all traces remain visible on the paper, and the painting cannot be changed. With oil paints, I paint layer by layer. I scratch, engrave, and move the paint so that the lower layers become visible. I make simple, minimalist paintings with ink and more complex and decorative paintings with oil paints.

"The space is messy and worn, and I don't have to worry about working methods, so I can just focus on painting."

WWW Contemporary: Do you notice a direct connection between the space and the creative thinking or the process of your working?

Eveliina Hämäläinen: I love the remote and quiet atmosphere of the building. It's easy to concentrate in the studio; it's my own world where invisible thoughts and experiences become visible. The space is messy and worn, and I don't have to worry about working methods, so I can just focus on painting. The studio is quite a long walk from home, either along the seashore or through the forest. Along the way, I have time to think about how to continue my unfinished paintings.
