Antti Heikkinen

Antti Heikkinen (b.1990) is a visual artist, who lives and works between Helsinki and Lappeenranta. His artistic practice is based on free-flowing observation and painting.

Via observation, he tries to create a connection and gain information about his surroundings. Drawings, written notes and photographs that he brings back to his studio form an archive. With these unorganized piles, he aims to surprise himself, trying to evoke ‘something magical’ to happen.

It seems to be a vague act of harvesting, to root and pick up the subjects that he finds meaningful to be processed through the language of painting.

When the painting process is ongoing, rather than hanging on to field notes, he attempts to see beyond observation. The outer world serves as the starting point, maybe even an excuse, to bring his inner world into the form of two-dimensional work.

For Heikkinen, painting is a way of asking questions and reflecting on himself through the motifs.
