Hanna-Kaisa
Korolainen (FI)
Textile artist Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen (D.A.) has studied photography at Turku Arts Academy, contemporary art at Université Paris 8, and textile art at Aalto University. She occasionally works also with ceramics and glass. Her doctoral dissertation, Making of Inspiration – From Monet to Warhol and Beyond (Aalto University, 2022), examined the role of inspiration in the creative process, with Teemu Mäki as the opponent. Korolainen draws inspiration particularly from art history, and in her works the past intertwines with the present, often resulting in unexpected and absurd combinations. The years she spent in Paris and Brussels, along with her background in fashion and textile design, are reflected in the strong emphasis on color and materiality in her works.
Korolainen’s works have been widely exhibited in Finland, including at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, the Design Museum, the Finnish Craft Museum, the Ostrobothnian Museum, and Gallery Lokal. Internationally, her works have been shown at Comfort Mental Gallery and the Finnish Institute in Paris, Snow Gallery in Berlin, Schloss Hollenegg in Austria, Milan Design Week, and the Collectible fair in Brussels.
Korolainen also creates large-scale commissioned works, including a series produced for the Virgil Abloh Foundation in Chicago, most notably Pink Harmony, a 28 m² rya rug in 2025.
Her works are included in public collections such as the Finnish National Gallery, Kunsthalle Helsinki, and the Design Museum, as well as in private collections across Europe, the United States, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. She has received several awards, including the Auno and Mauri Riuttu Foundation Prize and the ICMA Award of Excellence, and her rya rug collection has been awarded at New York Textile Month.
