Viljanen (FI)
Jirko Viljanen (b. 1991, Lahti) identifies himself as an experimental printmaker. In his creations, Viljanen may incorporate techniques such as monotype, pastels, paint and ink. He has chosen monotype as his favourite printmaking technique because it makes the print unique, unrepeatable, just like the experience behind the content of the work. He works within an imagery shaped by symbolism and surrealism, often drawing from personal experiences filtered and processed through the logic of dreams. Recent themes have been faltering mental health, the near-death experience and other reflections on death.
Viljanen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the Turku University of Applied Sciences’ Arts Academy. Viljasen's works have been exhibited, for example, at Salo Art Museum, Jyväskylä Art Museum, the Association of Finnish Printmakers’ Galleria G, Mältinranta Artcenter, Paja Gallery, Kunsthalle Turku, Il Bisonte Gallery in Florence and Grafiska Sällskapet in Stockholm. His works are included in notable collections such as the Finnish State Art Deposit Collection, Jyväskylä Art Museum and EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art. He has also made public art for the city of Kaarina.
In 2024, Viljanen was honored with the Finnish Art Society’s Ducat Prize.
