Juliana
Hyrri
Juliana Hyrri (1989) is an Estonian-born visual artist, painter, and cartoonist whose work explores the intersection of language and expression. In 2023, she was honored with the State Award by The National Council for Multidisciplinary Art.
Hyrri reflects on her artistic practice, stating, “Due to my bilingualism, I have been at the edge of a two-way language wall all my life and had to chase words and thoughts until I got frustrated. Writing and telling through art has given my thoughts and their structuring time and space. Artistic work has opened up a different, perhaps more suitable way for me to bring out something that my words and communication skills would otherwise not be quite enough for.”
Hyrri holds a master’s degree in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki. Her works are included in notable collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Tampere Art Museum, Aineen Kuvataidesäätiö, Nelimarkka Fund, HUS, Lähitapiola, Basware, and Aalto University.
