Björklund (FI)
Kira Björklund (b. 1993) is a visual artist living in Helsinki. She works in a variety of media, including textiles, sound, text and spatial installations. Her works explore the often invisible dialogue between the external and the internal.
Her most recent works have revolved around the themes of nutrition. In her previous solo exhibition “Subtle signals” at Galleria Loisti in Helsinki, she reflected on how the food we eat provides the building blocks for our body, but by dyeing the fabrics using medicinal and/or edible plants, food also served as the source of the colours in this series of works.
Not nourishing the body well, letting the head lead and ignoring the needs of the body and the soul can lead to serious, even chronic, illnesses. Similarly, economic growth, competition and fast pace are leading society, despite a troubling feeling; what we’re doing with ourselves, we’re doing to the planet.
The slow, intentional practice of dyeing fabrics and threads to use in embroidery is slow and time-consuming, offering a counterbalance to everyday life and giving a deeper connection to materials and methods.
“Subtle signals” was shown in November 2024 at Galleria Loisti, Helsinki. Björklund’s work has also been exhibited at Galleria 3 H+K in Pori, Galleria Muuntotila in Tampere, Varikko Galleria in Seinäjoki, Myymälä2 in Helsinki and Imatra Art Museum. She was awarded a grant from the Stina Krook Foundation in spring 2025.
Björklund holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2020) from Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, and has also studied at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium. She has also collaborated with other artists.
