Matti Rantanen (FI)

My work is based on the tradition of geometric painting, and I explore the fundamentals of painting: illusion, textures, color and spatiality. I aim to create an illusion of three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional surface in my paintings. I repeat elements to create a hypnotic and suggestive visual language. The painting process is a significant part of my work. I begin by painting a base, which I cover with tape and cut away the desired shapes using a craft knife. This process is repeated several times during the making of each work. I have left in the paintings some traces created during the process, such as brushstrokes and craft knife cuts on the surface of the painting. This distinguishes them from the world of digital imagery and reveals their handmade nature.

I graduated from the Free Art School in 2000 and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from London Metropolitan University in 2008. I have had several solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. My most recent solo exhibition was at Gallery Ama in Helsinki, Finland in April 2024. My works are held in several Finnish collections, including the State Art Collection, the Helsinki Art Museum (HAM), the Finnish Art Society, and the Pro Artibus Foundation.
