Inka-Maaria Jurvanen (FI)

Inka-Maaria Jurvanen (b. 1980) is a visual artist whose main medium is pencil drawing on different surfaces. In her recent works she has been experimenting with taking drawing towards three-dimensionality and installation, with materials such as plywood, tree burls, marble and granite.

Time is an important element in drawing. Is it possible to create an experience of both simultaneity and succession through a two-dimensional image, to change the direction of time? How does a change from a sharp drawing line to a soft one affect the drawing?
Jurvanen is interested in different worldviews when a worldview consists of structures that are layered, nested, parallel, visible and invisible. These structures are decisive in internalizing and processing experiences. They influence society, the distribution of power, human relationships, our values, and choices.

Jurvanen has exhibited both in Finland and internationally since 2007. Latest exhibition venues include Mänttä Art Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, tm•gallery and Red Bud Arts Center (Houston, Texas). Her works are represented in the collections of Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Finnish State Art Deposit Collection.
