Vappu
Johansson (FI)
Vappu Johansson is a Helsinki-based visual artist specializing in intaglio printmaking techniques. By combining various printing methods, photography, and drawing, she creates layered ensembles in which individual pieces connect to form a visual diary. Her practice is sometimes inspired by everyday observations, and at other times by an attempt to reach toward the vastness of life and give visual form to phenomena that are difficult to name. She has an in-depth understanding of the properties of different printmaking materials and uses them in an exploratory and versatile manner.
Johansson studied at the Free Art School and the University of Art and Design Helsinki, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1990. Her focus on printmaking developed during her time at the Grafiris studio in Helsinki. She is a founding member of Arabia Prinmakers association, which runs a printmaking workshop, and she is also a member of the Helsinki Paper Workshop.
She has participated in numerous international exhibitions and was nominated for the Queen Sonja Print Award in 2014. Since 1993, she has held solo exhibitions in Finland and abroad. In addition to her artistic practice, she has worked as an art teacher and served in various positions of trust within artists organizations. Her art is included in several collections.
