Noora Huolman (FI)

“I create paper-based art with a strong foundation in printmaking. I work very physically through various methods of removal, where I apply color directly onto the paper and remove it using different tools, such as a kitchen grater or an etching needle. The process of removal involves undefined acts and numerous repetitions.

To me, the touch upon the material is essential. I converse with the paper through touch and become one with the material through physical processing. Through the physicality and embodiment of the work, the passive surface of the paper becomes active. The paper transforms, revealing various material layers and sensitivities from within, recording the movement and the mark I produce with my body and tools. While working, I challenge myself with numerous repetitions. I love it, yet I hate it. My works are images of the act of physical experience itself.”
